스트리트스마트

 스트리트스마트(Street smart)

- 길에서 배운 사람이라는 뜻이다. 해당 분야에서 산전수전을 겪으며 노하우를 몸으로 축적한 인재로 굳이 번역하자면 '생활의 달인'쯤 되는 개념이다.  

Most important perhaps, being street smart comes from experience. It means you’ve learned how to take what has happened to you, good or bad, think about it, and learn to improve from it. The prime distinction between street smarts and book smarts is who is at the center of the knowledge. On the street, it’s you. In a book it’s you trying to absorb someone elses take on the world, and however amazing the writer is, you are at best one degree removed from the actual experience. Street smarts means you’ve put yourself at risk and survived. Or thrived. Or have scars. You’ve been tested and have a bank of courage to depend on when you are tested again.   실용을 중시하는 서구에서는 '스트리트 스마트'에 힘을 더 실어주는 경향이 있다. 기술자나 기능인에 대해 존중해 주고 학벌에 대해서도 큰 신경을 쓰지 않는 분위기가 분명히 있다. 이 추세는 시장과 고객을 더욱 잘 알아야 하는 기업 중심 시대가 활짝 피면서 더욱 가속화되고 있다.
  '북 스마트'와 '스트리트 스마트'는 사실 두부 자르듯 나눌 수 없는 개념이다. 아주 쉬운 일이 아니라면 대부분 책에서 배운 지식을 기반으로 하되 자신의 노하우와 경험을 덧붙여 처리하는 게 일반적이다. 학교에서 잘 배워도 새로운 직무교육이 필요하고,회사에서 일하다가 새로운 이론을 배우기도 해야 하는 것이다. 실제로 미국 TV의 경우 '북 스마트'와 '스트리트 스마트'들이 출연해 맞붙는 퀴즈프로그램까지 나왔을 정도다.
  이 둘을 결합한 '이상적인' 인재상이 바로 하버드대 연구로 유명한 '딥 스마트(deep smart)'다. 놀라운 경쟁력을 갖춘 '초절정 내공 고수'로 번역하면 되겠다. 연구에 따르면 '딥 스마트'는 오랜 경험을 통한 깊은 성찰，그리고 좋은 스승이라는 두 가지 요소가 함께 있을 때 창조될 수 있다. '북 스마트'와 '스트리트 스마트'의 장점을 모두 갖추려고 노력할 때 얻을 수 있는 경지라고 할까.  (권영설의 '경영 업그레이드' 中)
